Flight Instructor Ground School Syllabus

This course of study requires an 8 hour class day with 2-4 hours of study per night.  This training experience is intense and requires your complete focus and dedication.  Your reward:  solid skills that will turn you into a quality instructor. 

FAR §61.187(b)(1) provides the guidance for what you must accomplish to obtain this certificate.  The Practical Test Standards mirror and amplify these requirements. Our course uses these two resources as the foundation for the syllabus we use to provide thorough preparation for the certificate.

Syllabus - Week 1

Monday - 9am to 5pm

  • Orientation
  • The Learning Process & Teaching Methods, Flight Instructor Characteristics, Flight Instructor Responsibilities, Planning & Creating Lessons, Following a Syllabus
  • Review of Part 61: Requirements for Student, Private, and Commercial Pilot certificates, Flight reviews, Currency requirements, Written test requirements, Flight Instructor regulations and Student Endorsements.
  • Instruction Lab Assignments
  • Daily Flight Lesson Assignments - flight instruction is free and unlimited for the duration of training (aircraft/fuel not included).
      Homework:  Prepare for Instruction Labs

Tuesday - 9am to 5pm

  • Airplane Systems - Instruction Lab
  • Aerodynamic Principles - Instruction Lab
      Homework:  Read Oral Exam Guide #1, 
                    Section I Fund of Inst (50 pages)

Wednesday - 9am to 5pm

  • Mock Oral Examination
  • Flight Environment - Instruction Lab
  • Communication & Flight Info - Instruction Lab
      Homework:  Prepare for Instruction Lab

Thursday - 9am to 5pm

  • Meteorology For Pilots - Instruction Lab
  • Interpreting Weather Data - Instruction Lab
      Homework:  Read Oral Exam Guide #1, 
                    Section IV Lesson Plans (96 pages)

Friday  - 9am to 5pm

  • Mock Oral Examination
  • Maneuvers Lesson Plans
