Presentation Guidelines

Follow these steps for success:

  • Read the Question to be Answered to the class
  • Define words
  • Explain basic concepts
  • Give examples!
  • Allow for additional examples from instructor/other students, provide opportunity for concept synthesis and further exploration of the topic.
  • Questions to be Answered in your presentation:

    1. Is there global competition?
    2. How does globalisation affect management practices?
    3. Why the emphasis on technology?
    4. What does society expect from managers?
    5. Why the pmphasis on the entrepreneurial spirit?
    6. What will the worforce of 2005 look like?
    7. What the increased concern with quality?
    8. Why must managers think in terms of quantum changes rather than incremental changes?
    9. Why do organisations lay off workers?
    10. Why the emphasis on flexibility & temporaries?
    11. Are as we know them disappearing?
    12. How do managers become empowering coaches
    13. How do we make managers more sensitive to differences?
    14. How do managers improve their ethics?
    15. Will chaos dominate a manager's activities?

      • Do you think that GE's goal of being #1 or #2 in every one of its markets had any influence on the Kidder Peabody scandal?  Explain.
      • Do you think Jack Welch handled the Kidder scandal ethically?  Why or why not?
      • How can an idolised corporate leader who heads a large organisation prevent scandals or unethical practices from happening again?
      • Do you think Jack Welch is ultimately responsible for what happens in 'his' organisation?
      • GE has a code of ethics.  Why didn't it work?

    Other important points:
    • You've been given a number of resources to assist you in your project... see Better Learning Page, Oral Presentations section for tips.
    • Your grade is derived from the Oral Evaluation Guide so please familiarise yourself with it.  Your grade will suffer if you don't use it and pay attention to it.
    • If you're going to read your entire presentation from the textbook, forget it.  I can read the book myself and so can the class.
    • If you're not prepared, be ready for an "F" on this assignment.
