Presentation Guidelines

Follow these steps for success:

  • Read the Question to be Answered to the class
  • Define words
  • Explain basic concepts
  • Give examples!
  • Allow for additional examples from instructor/other students, provide opportunity for concept synthesis and further exploration of the topic.
  • Questions to be Answered in your presentation:

    1. Who are managers, and where do they work?
    2. What three common characteristics do all organisations have?
    3. How are managers different from operative employees?
    4. What titles do managers have in organisations?
    5. What is management and what do managers do?
    6. How do we define management?
    7. What are the 4 functions of management?
    8. What are management roles?
    9. How are these roles evident in managers' jobs?
    10. Are effective managers also traditional managers?
    11. Is the manager's job universal?
    12. Is managing the same in profit and not-for-profit organisations?
    13. Are management concepts transferable across national borders?
    14. How much importance does the marketplace put on managers?
    15. Do all managers make six-figure incomes?
    16. Why study management?
    17. How do we study management?
    18. What is the process approach?
    19. How can a systems approach integrate management concepts?
    20. What is a contingency approach to the study of management?
    21. Case study presentation
      • Describe how EJ performs the 4 functions of management.  Give specific examples from the case.
      • What management roles did EJ play in starting TSI?  Did these roles change?  Explain.  Give specific examples from the case.
      • Describe the management competancies EJ must possess to become the #1 retailer inthe US.  Give specific examples from the case.

    • Your grade is derived from the Oral Evaluation Guide so please familiarise yourself with it.  Your grade will suffer if you don't use it and pay attention to it.
    • If you're going to read your entire presentation from the textbook, forget it.  I can read the book myself and so can the class.
    • If you're not prepared, be ready for an "F".
